Brian Sabeanthe architect behind three World Series titles with the San Francisco Giants, has been hired by the Yankees as executive advisor to senior vice president and GM Brian Cashman.
The 66-year-old spent the last three decades with the Giants in multiple roles, serving as GM and senior vice president from 1996-2015, building Giants teams that won the World Series in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
Sabean was named Executive of the Year by Sporting News in 2003 and by Baseball America in 2003 and 2012.
Coming back to the Bronx is a bit of a homecoming for Sabean, who worked his way up the scouting department with the Yankees for eight seasons from 1985-1992. He served as the Yankees’ vice president of player development and scouting from 1990-92 before moving on to the Giants.
“It’s a little emotional and overwhelming,” Sabean told the media over Zoom on Tuesday. “Somewhat of a strange twist of fate that after 30 years to rejoin the organization where I started. A lot of memories are flashing back. Specifically thinking about people like Gene Michael and Bill Livesey who were very instrumental in my growth as an executive and a person. They were a huge part of my Yankee life as mentors and as friends.”
“It’s humbling. At my age I really appreciate being wanted and needed. As I talked to Cash things became organic at how I can help the organization. I’m all in. I’ll do anything to help the Yankees win another World Series .”
Sabean explained that his specific role in the organization will form organically as he and Cashman work closer together. But Sabean reiterated that he’ll help Cashman wherever he needs him, whether that’s in roster construction or scouting. “
“I hope to be a utility tool,” Sabean said. “Voice opinions when needed, work in those areas [Cashman] may want more advice. We’ll see how it develops.”
