Mets calling up prized prospect Brett Baty for key series vs. the Braves, reports say

Brett Baty is getting his time to shine in the big leagues.

As the Mets deal with injuries to their infield including the loss of Luis Guillorme and with Eduardo Escobar hampered with a side discomfort, the team is calling up their prized prospect to join the team for their series against the Braves. ESPN’s Jeff Passan was the first to report the move.

Baty, 22, was taken by the Mets with the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft. He quickly rose through the Mets’ system, only recently joining the Class AAA team in Syracuse. In only six games there, he hit. 364 with an RBI. In 89 games with Class AA Binghamton, Baty hit .312 with 19 homers and 59 RBI.

The Round Rock, Texas, native is the Mets’ No. 2 prospect and No. 18 overall prospects in Major League Baseball according to MLB.com. Showalter was reticent when asked about the potential call-up of one of the team’s top prospects.

Brett Baty dives headfirst into second on a double Tuesday night in Binghamton.

“We’ll see what the new sunrise brings,” Showalter said. “A lot of things can change tonight. I think there will be opportunities to talk about those things.”

The Mets currently sit with a 75-41 record and a 4.5-game lead over the Braves in the NL East.

Baty will look to bolster the Mets’ infield with Guillorme expected to miss four to six weeks with a moderate left groin strain. Escobar has been limited to left-handed swinging despite one right-handed attempt during Friday’s game.

Showalter said that Escobar is available in certain capacities, but he was scratched from the Mets’ lineup on Tuesday after going through a workout on the field.

“After the workout out there, I didn’t think it was a good idea to run him out there and maybe run the potential of hurting him to a point where it might be long term,” Showalter said. “I didn’t like what we saw out there from a starting standpoint. He can still do some things for us.”

Deven Marrero received the start at third base on Tuesday. It was his first major league start of the 2022 season after he appeared as a substitute during Monday night’s game.
