This game features a matchup between the 14-1 Huskies and the 12-3 Friars. UConn lost their undefeated record last week, falling on the road to Xavier. They have an equally tough game this week, on the road against a Providence team with an identical record to Xavier’s. The Friars have won 7 games in a row, surging to a 4-0 start in Big East play. This will be a statement game for both teams.

UConn vs Providence Vegas Odds

Game Breakdown

Prior to their loss against Xavier, UConn had opened the season with 14 consecutive wins. Even more impressive, was their ability to win all 14 of those games by double digits. Those performances allowed the Huskies to rise to #1 in the AP Poll. Following the loss, they are now ranked #4, but sit at #2 in the NET and KenPom rankings. UConn had looked like the best team in the country before losing to Xavier. This week’s game will prove if they truly have what it takes to make a deep NCAA Tournament run come March.

Providence has been improving steadily over the past couple of weeks. They remain unranked in the AP Poll, but received a handful of votes. Providence currently ranks #43 in KenPom, and #48 in the NET rankings. They’ve been climbing those rankings consistently, aided by emerging Sophomore Guard Devin Carter, who has reached 20+ points in each of the Friars’ last 3 games. Providence’s losses aren’t too bad, having come against some strong teams, but they’ve yet to snag that big win. That could come here against UConn.

UConn vs Providence Prediction

UConn’s performance against Xavier was certainly concerning for what had appeared to be the best team in college basketball. How they bounce back in an equally tough matchup at Providence will determine the direction of the remainder of their season, as they get into the heat of Big East play. The Huskies are better than the Friars on paper, but Providence has been red-hot, and owns the home-court advantage. Ultimately, I’d take a UConn team that won 14 games by double digits, although I expect this one to be much closer.
